Starting to skate as an adult

Nobody at the rink is judging your wobble — half of them started this year. Adult beginners are the fastest-growing part of SoCal skating, and the whole infrastructure (quiet rink nights, patient instructors, rental quads) is built for you.

The first month

Week one: rent skates, find a rail, get comfortable just standing. Week two: laps at a quiet rink — Tuesday and Wednesday nights are usually near-empty, and the crowd reports on each spot page will tell you. Week three: your first all-ages session. Week four: you'll know whether you want rhythm, trail, or park, and there's a guide for each.

Gear stays simple: helmet and wrist guards until your ankles figure it out. Buy your own quads after three sessions, not before — and buy them from a local skate shop, where fitting advice is free.

You are the audience

Every spot below is flagged beginner-friendly by the skaters who report there, and every instructor below lists "Basics & balance" among their specialties. Both lists update live as the community reports and instructors join.
